Academic Departments

The Faculty of Social Sciences comprises of 6 departments and 1 office , namely:


1. Department of Geography

The Department of Geography offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography and a Master of Science in Geography of Human Settlement Planning. It has seven full-time faculty members. The mission of the Department is to produce and promote knowledgeable bachelors in the field of Geography; therefore the department has been under the on-going process of curriculum development. In order to respond to the demand for graduates in Geography (Bachelor of Science) for both public and private organizations alike, the Department has revised its previous Bachelor of Arts degree into the present program emphasizing practical classes and field work. After completing the third year of study, students will attend a one-month practicum with public and/or private agencies.

At the same time, the master’s degree program in Geography of Human Settlement Planning is under revision. It is expected that the revised program on Development Planning will be offered for the 2003 academic year.

2. Department of History

Department of history was upgraded from a section established in 1966 and attached to Faculty of Social Sciences, Kasetsart University since 1985.

The mission of the department of historyTo serve such value, the mission of the department of history, therefore, offers the courses base on area studies, i.e. Thai history, Southeast Asian History, American and European history, and Middle East History. The curriculum development is based on the interests of students and intention to bring about a deep understanding of history, civilizations and cultures of the selected area. Through the programs studied, students will gain a strong positive impact in learning how to read critically and write effectively. They will be prepared for distinguished careers as researchers or specialists to work in government organizations and private enterprises.

In 2006, Department of history offered Bachelor of Arts (Southeast Asian Studies) To educational opportunities for students interested in independent living. Cultural and economic development of ASEAN countries.

3. Department of Law

The law teaching and study at Kasetsart University has begun since 1943. Law courses focusing on co-op laws were offered by the Division of Law, Faculty of Cooperative Sciences. In order to offer fundamental and elective law courses to students at the Department of Political Sciences, Division of Law was raised to the department and it became a part of Faculty of Social Sciences in 1977. Currently, there are many courses offered by the Department of Law.

In addition to academic and research works, the Department of Law has been working actively in disseminating legal knowledge to the public and providing assistance to people through the Law Clinic. Therefore, the Law Clinic is fully responsible for public interest tasks.

In 2006, Department of Law Offered Bachelor of Laws course. Which emphasizes agriculture and legal intellectual property laws and international trade law.

4. Department of Political Science and Public Administration

The Department main mission is to strengthen Thailand development policy by developing human resources for both public and private sectors, which is at the heart of the recent economic and social development plan of Thailand, and by helping to solve problems of public policy. The Department offers teaching degree and executive programmes leading to Bachelor of Arts (Political Sciences) and Master of Arts (Political Sciences) degrees. The Department is also working on realising the teaching and researching programme of studies at doctorate level. In order to serve needs of society and to broaden the citizen’s opportunity of self-development, the Department offers her Bachelor Degree programmes with different specialisation, namely international relations, government, public policy management, and justice and security management. Moreover, the Department offers Master Degree programmes with choices of programme construction ranging from full-time study, special - session study, as well as the alternatives of studying by an in -dept research programme or a more practical teaching programme. The Department also organises research and teaching programmes leading to Master of Arts degree at the University campuses in Ratchaburi and Lopburi provinces in order to broaden educational opportunity for the citizen outside Bangkok and to help facilitating the country rural development process.

5. Department of Psychology

In 1964, Department of Social Science and Humanity was established as a part of Faculty of Science and Liberal Art. Psychology courses, such as An Introduction to Psychology, Psychology in Daily life, Social Psychology and Psychology of Human Relations were included in the program of this Department.In 1974, Faculty of Social Science was established, and the field of Psychology became one branch of the Faculty.

In 1975, Psychology became one Department and accepted undergraduate students to enroll in the Department of Psychology. The goals of this Department were to develop knowledge in Psychology and serve public knowledge and benefits, to create students with knowledge, good quality and morality, to participate in social development and to preserve Thai culture.In the beginning, Department of Psychology had 2 fields: Developmental Psychology and Clinical Psychology.

In 1985, Department of Psychology offered 2 more fields: Industrial Psychology and Community Psychology. Industrial Psychology aimed to serve labor market and industrial development. Community Psychology aimed to promote good health and prevent physical and psychological health problems. In addition, the Department of Psychology recognized the importance of economic and industrial development as Thailand, at that time, was changing from agricultural-based to industrial-based country.

In 1987, Department of Psychology offered graduate program in Industrial Psychology in order to create knowledgeable graduates for business, organization and industry. There were 8 students enrolled in the program as the 1st generation.

In 2002, the graduate programs in Community Psychology, regular and special programs, were also established.

In the present, the Department of Psychology has continued to provide these undergraduate and graduate programs for interest and qualified students which aim to serve and fulfill its goals.

6. Department of Sociology and Anthropology

The department of Sociology and Anthropology offers a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology and a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology. The department has 16 full-time staff members.

The department has developed its curriculum using that of the updated 1998. It is to respond the on-going changes of the Thai socio-cultural context. And this is to prepare students for the needs and development of society.

It is required after the third year for student to do fieldwork in their research study. In cooperation with the department of Communal Forestry, the department offers a double degree of Bachelors (B.S. and B.A.) in Social Forestry, Dept.of Forest Management and Sociology and Anthropology to be taken within 5 years. The department has been the on-going process of offering special program for the Master of Arts in Applied Sociology.

7. Office of the Faculty Secretariat

Office of the Faculty Secretariat is responsible for coordination with department both within and outside the Faculty, in matters relatinf to general administrator, finace, materials, academic services, student registration, extension service, curriculum development and student activities.
